Georgetown County Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Increase Effects

Why were there no residents present at the public hearing for the $65.193 million dollar budget for the Georgetown County 2014 Fiscal year?

Ok - So I have been a resident of Georgetown County for 7 years now, and this is a first. The residents of Georgetown County have always been active when it comes to budget issues, community issues, political issues, really anything that would affect the Waccamaw Neck. So why was this budget approved and the only representatives of the community there were the media? Very strange indeed.

In a recent article by Chris Sokoloski - there was a vote for millage rates in Georgetown county to increase in the next calendar year by almost $7.50 per $100,000 on assessed property values, which is included in the above budget. Bottom line is, the budget increase that was approved in 5-0 vote, was partly handed down to the property owners of the county, and the more you own, the more you pay.

Can anyone explain why the community is not taking action on these types of increases? And where are our representatives during these critical votes? Georgetowncountysc.org has a post of their meetings - they meet twice a month for the year, but only once during June, July, and August..hmmm...

I love this area, and am all for keeping it clean and beautiful, but would like to have a voice on these committees through our elected representatives. Just because it is summer, doesn't mean you can take a break from the issues that affect our communities. This is a just thought you should know moment, and in no way does it represent a political view either way. Budgets are effective only when both sides are heard.
