Impact Fees will soon go into effect for Georgetown County, Including Pawleys Island

It has been a topic of discussion for quite some time amongst the Realtors here in Pawleys Island.  The impact fees for new construction within Georgetown County is due to take effect beginning June 1, 2009.  Realtors and Homebuilders argue that this is deterring future homeowners to consider other places to live besides here.  With the given economy already taking its toll nationally and locally, it is of the opinion that this will only make matters worse;  the fees would add about $6000 to the cost of building a new home.  The [sort of] good news is that these impact fees will be not be applied to the City of Georgetown, Pawleys Island, and Andrews, due to the fact that there is no way to  collect the fees because the building permits are issued by the municipalities in those areas.

Do you think it is fair to have homebuilders pay for the impact fees?  What effect do you think it will have on our community in Pawleys Island?
